2023 Oscar Best Pictures

I had a lot of fun ranking the best picture nominees a few years ago, so I figured why not give it another go and see just what Hollywood thinks the best movies of last year were. As usual, there are some glaring omissions; the wonderful Talk To Me is nowhere to be seen and the masterpiece of Godzilla Minus One is disappointingly absent, but none of that is shocking. Those aside, let’s go through the rest of the list and see what made the list and where I would put them in the rankings!

Uncle Sam, Memorial Valley Massacre, and Deathdream

Memorial Day Viewings!

Another Memorial Day came and went this week, and I’m always in the mood for weird themed horror movies, so its time to talk about the strange movies I watched. Before we even begin, I will own up to one thing, only one of the movies below technically takes place on the weekend of Memorial Day. But the other two are thematically related, so I stand by their inclusion! And they’re all weird stuff anyway that you wouldn’t typically have a reason to watch, so when else am I gonna be able to talk about these? Time to get patriotic and celebrate the American institution of slasher films with our first film, Uncle Sam!

Zombie (AKA Zombi 2) and Return of the Living Dead

Zombie (AKA Zombi 2) (1979)

Directed by Lucio Fulci

Return of the Living Dead (1985)

Directed by Dan O’Bannon

Been having zombies on the brain recently, so I decided to watch two well-known classics of the zombie subgenre, Lucio Fulci’s “Zombie” (AKA Zombi 2), which is renowned for its use of heavy gore effects, and the much more comedically slanted Return of the Living Dead, which is perhaps most famous for starting the ‘zombies eat brains’ trope. These were two exceptionally different viewing experiences, and interestingly enough they both have direct links to George Romero’s classic Night of the Living Dead. I mean, all modern zombie films owe a great deal to that particular movie but both films have a particular link that I’ll get more into shortly. Let’s start with Zombie, the Italian gore extravaganza!

My Thoughts On The Best Pictures Oscar Nominations

Its obvious already, isn’t it?

Yes yes yes, I don’t really care about the Oscars, and no, I don’t plan on watching them. But I do find myself in an unusual situation this year, where I have seen all of the nominations for Best Picture for this year’s Oscars. I figured why not take a brief moment to talk about these movies and give a brief summary of my thoughts on them and given a general ranking. Also yes, the Gretel & Hansel review is going up tonight. This is a busy time of year. So now let’s get started talking about movies that I liked, movies that I loved, and movies that I would never have seen otherwise!

Arctic Dogs

Directed by Aaron Woodley

Before we get into Arctic Dogs let me tell you about my only look into what the general public thought about it pre-release. I was watching trailers before The Addams Family and a couple came on for upcoming animated films, which most people laughed at. Then the trailer for Arctic Dogs came on. I have never heard a quieter theater in my entire life. All talking ceased. No one could muster a reaction to the absurd generic mess before us. After watching the whole movie, in an empty theater, I might add, I have to say that their reactions were rather prescient, Arctic Dogs is mostly nothing.

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark (2019)

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark (2019)

Directed by André Øvredal

Before we get into the film I need to lay my cards on the table, I was pumped for this movie. Some of the first horror stories I ever read were from the Scary Stories book series and boy did they scare the hell out of me. The illustrations, the campfire story approach, the sometimes gruesome and gritty endings to the stories all worked so perfectly to appeal to my budding horror fascination. I like the books so much that my wife recently bought me a reproduction set as a gift that I now cherish. Please take that all into consideration when I say that liked the Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark movie.
