Beverly Hills Chihuahua and more!

Beverly Hills Chihuahua (2007)
Directed by Raja Gosnell

Beverly Hills Chihuahua. That sounds fun, right? Like, Chihuahuas are…an almost universally hated dog breed and Beverly Hills is a place that exists? God, I can’t even pretend I’m excited about this one. Beverly Hills Chihuahua was the result of visionary director Raja Gosnell, a legend in the dog film subgenre as the director of Scooby-Doo, Scooby-Doo 2, and 2018’s smash hit about dog molestation Show Dogs, deciding that he didn’t need a previously established franchise a la Scooby-Doo, he could just make one himself. With 3 Beverly Hills Chihuahua movies in existence, he succeeded, but at what cost?

My Dog The Space Traveler (2013)

Yes, that background is a drowning child.

My Dog The Space Traveler
Directed by Robin Christian

Sometimes it can be difficult to figure out what a movie will be about until you’ve watched it, case in point My Dog The Space Traveler. That sounds exciting, doesn’t it? Like the movie is this big space adventure where a kid’s dog visits all these alien worlds, and maybe the kid has to find him and get him home! Sounds like it could be fun, and so does the description of the movie, which reads “Aliens have invaded Earth…And they want your dogs!!” Let me break it to you: this is not fun. This made me want to stop watching movies. Not just this movie. Not just dog movies. All movies.

This screenshot represents about half the runtime.

Star Paws

Star Paws

Well here it is. I have made it my goal to watch the weirdest, the strangest, and the most shocking Dog movies out there this summer. We haven’t quite gotten to the mindmelting stuff yet, don’t worry it’s coming, so I wanted to share a dog movie from our favorite purveyor of random bits of scraps arranged in the shape of films, Evan Tramel! I’m probably the only person on Earth who knows Evan Tramel by name so let me refresh your memory by linking to two of his past films, A Frozen Christmas, and The Grump Who Stole Christmas.

Does this not instill you with confidence?

Buckle up. We’re in for a bumpy ride.

Sherlock Bones (1994)

And the winner for most deceptive DVD cover goes to…SHERLOCK BONES!

Before I get into my review of Sherlock Bones, I want you all to do a thought experiment with me. Imagine, if you will, what you think would happen in a movie titled Sherlock Bones. Think of how many different ways you could take that material! Maybe you’re imagining a dog dressed like Sherlock Holmes solving mysteries with his human Watson? Or maybe Watson is a dog too and they have to solve dog mysteries that humans don’t know about! Maybe they need to stop a cat burglar that’s an actual cat! My point is, whatever movie you are imagining would be a better movie than Sherlock Bones.

A Dog’s Adventure (2001)

HE SEES ALL

Its that time of year again, time for my favorite themed reviews, the Dog Days of Summer! If you’re a returning reader then you know what to expect, lean back, relax and get ready for a dog cinema extravaganza! If you’re new then let me briefly explain, when I first started writing about bizarre movies I stumbled upon the strange sub-genre of dog based films. Previously I’ve covered movies like, My Magic Dog, Dude Where’s My Dog?, and An Easter Bunny Puppy, and each year I think I’ve found the strangest, most out there dog film. Each year I am wrong. These movies are constantly being produced and somehow they always manage to make one worse than the ones I have already seen.

A Dog’s Way Home (2019)

A Dog’s Way Home (2019)
Directed by Charles Martin Smith
Viewed in Theatre

Summary: As saccharine and familiar as I expected, though the scene where Bella, the dog, winds up chained to a dying homeless man somewhat surprised me.

Woooo! First theatrical dog movie of 2019! Man, when I saw that there was a January bound dog movie, I jumped for joy and recoiled in terror, especially because this is my first January where I’m operating this blog. Thinking back about A Dog’s Way Home, I almost wish it was a worse movie. Not because it’s good, and why on Earth would you want to hear about a good dog movie, but because most of its sins can be pinned on one of two flaws, with the far more serious of those flaws being just how god damn boring this movie is.

Moo Moo And The Three Witches

Moo Moo and the Three Witches

Directed by Tracy Wren

Viewed on Amazon Prime

I thought long and hard about what to review today, the most special day of the year, and I eventually decided that I needed to cover something particularly memorable and off the beaten path. I’ve featured all sorts of films on this site, movies about psychopathic killers, ghosts, cannibals, immortal talking dogs who’ve met Jesus, clowns, and I figure that now would be a good time to really bring us all back to our Halloween roots with a simple story about everyone’s favorite topic, witches! Three witches to be precise, who share the film with Moo Moo. What the hell is a Moo Moo? Why, it is this!

A Halloween Puppy (2012)

A Halloween Puppy (2012)

Directed by Mary Crawford

Viewed on Amazon Video

You probably have a question about the heading for this review (if you haven’t read it please look up there now) and that is, who is Mary Crawford and why does it matter if she didn’t direct this movie? Someone directed this movie and used Mary Crawford as their alias, a director whose distinct stylings may be recognizable to some of you. I’ll just list some hallmarks of this director before I tell you who they are, maybe you can figure it out before I reveal the truth. This movie features a dog, who is not a puppy, prominently on the poster but the dog is barely in the movie. The two leads are a young man and a young neighbor lady who is trying to get the young man to realize that she is interested in him. Montages and stretched out, opening and closing credits sequences pad the film. It inexplicably takes place in a California mansion and a cabin in the woods. Eric Roberts is there. If you haven’t figured it out yet the director is David DeCoteau, the “director” of An Easter Bunny Puppy, which I covered several weeks ago and it drove me to the brink of insanity with its endless montages and inane story lines. Is his Halloween themed outing any better? Do you even need to ask that?

Spooky Buddies (2011)

Spooky Buddies (2011)

Directed by Robert Vince

Summary: A bunch of kids have to stop a warlock from sacrificing their dogs to an evil spirit dog. It is less fun than it sounds.

Spooktober continues, and it has engulfed the Dog Days of Summer and left something far more horrifying in its wake. An unholy fusion of dogs and horror has emerged to remind the world that no holiday is safe from dog movies. Which brings me to today’s movie, Spooky Buddies. Directed by Robert Vince, of Pup Star “fame,” and continuing the proud tradition of the “_____ Buddies” movies, this movie stars five puppies as they navigate through a wacky adventure that will surely end with all of them learning a valuable lesson. We’ve already seen a few very memorable dog films from Robert Vince, so expectations are quite high here, but does Spooky Buddies live up to the hype?

Pup Star 3: World Tour (2018)

Pup Star 3: World Tour

Gather round and rejoice, my friends, because we have finally gotten to the last movie in the Pup Star franchise! Tiny and her canine friends have brought us with them on such a magnificent journey, from the cozy suburbs of Chicago to the mean streets of Brooklyn. Now they threaten promise to bring us with them on an even more exciting adventure! An adventure that defies all borders and will definitely be completely culturally sensitive to every place that we visit. Seriously though, these Pup Star movies have been this completely out of nowhere journey into a world where dogs talk and nothing really makes sense and I am a little sad to see the series finished. Pup Star movies are an annual event thus far though, so maybe next year we’ll meet back up with Tiny and her crew. But that’s then and this is now, so let us get into Pup Star 3: World Tour!
