A Quiet Place Part II

A Quiet Place Part II
Written & Directed by John Krasinski

Oh, you can’t escape from me that easily, A Quiet Place Part II. I had tickets lined up to see you last year in a double feature IMAX screening with the first film, which I’m still pissed didn’t end up happening by the way, and I’ve been waiting with bated breath ever since I knew theatres would soon be reopening. I’ll be upfront and say I’m a fan of the original movie, which isn’t really a shocker because most people like it I think, even if it was a little uneven sometimes in the plot department. If A Quiet Place Part II managed to be even half as good as the first one, it’d still probably be worth watching, but I was hoping it would live up to or even exceed its predecessor, and I’m thrilled that I was right. A Quiet Place Part II is exactly what a sequel should be.

Skull: The Mask

Skull: The Mask
Written & Directed by Armando Fonseca & Kapel Furman

I’ve been waiting for this one for a long time! If you’ve been following me for any length of time then you may know of my love for slasher movies, as long ago these formulaic forays into violence and gore have wormed their way into my heart. So when I heard about a slasher movie coming out of Brazil, a country who I don’t believe I’ve watched a movie from before, I got excited. When I heard that this movie was a gory extravaganza and tribute to the over-the-top slashers of yesteryear, I was there. Now that Skull: The Mask has come stateside and I finally got the chance to see it, did it live up to the hype? Yes! Well, mostly.

Spiral: From The Book Of Saw

Spiral: From The Book Of Saw (2021)
Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman

After fourteen months I’m finally back at the movies! It isn’t quite the same as it was before, but I’m really pumped to get back to slight normalcy after spending too much of my free time at movie theaters. Right before everything shut down last year, I did see a trailer or two for Spiral, a movie that I kind of wrote off at the time because I’m not a huge fan of the Saw series and there were a lot of other movies coming out that looked a lot better, like Saint Maud which I recently reviewed. But now very little else is playing in the theater so I went into Spiral with as open of a mind as I could and now that I’ve seen Spiral I have this to say: what the hell did I just watch?

Saint Maud

Saint Maud (2019)

Written & Directed by Rose Glass

Oh, Saint Maud, you’ve eluded me for far too long. I first saw your trailer what seems like eons ago back when I could still go to the movies and I was crushed when the theatres shut down and I realized I wouldn’t get a chance to see this on the big screen. I’m still bummed about it, but I can’t be too upset because now Saint Maud is readily available on Amazon Prime and Hulu and I had the chance to see it. The trailer was so great and all the hype I heard from people in the UK, where it was first released, had me so hyped for this film that I was worried it wouldn’t hold up to all that positive buzz. I was wrong for thinking that for even a moment, because wow. Just wow.

Mortal Kombat (2021)

Mortal Kombat (2021)
Directed by Simon McQuoid

It’s such an interesting cultural shift that took Mortal Kombat from a series decried by censors and cultural critics to a movie that has had the biggest streaming release on HBO’s new streaming service, HBOMax. More than Wonder Woman 1984, more than Tom & Jerry (to the surprise of no one) more even than Godzilla vs. Kong, and it wasn’t even close, Mortal Kombat had more views in the first 3 days than GvK had in its first 5. I’m happy that Mortal Kombat is back in the mainstream, I’ve been a fan of the series since I was a kid and had to toggle the blood effects off before I was allowed to play it. I love the 1995 Mortal Kombat in all its shlocky nostalgic glory, and I was really looking forward to this reboot to bring old fans and new fans together. Unfortunately, it’s terrible. Also mild spoilers.
